Optimist
The Optimist is the most popular and common dinghy in the country. It is the go-to boat for young sailors looking to start their adventure into the big world of sailing (Did you know half of the sailors in the last Olympic games started in Optimists?).
The Optimist class is designed to encourage and develop young sailors with many events having a regatta fleet which provides a fun and enjoyable place to learn sailing during a big regatta. There is also the opportunity to get on to the Irish Sailing Optimist squad and go on to represent Ireland on the international stage.
Here in Howth Yacht Club, we have regular coaching for our Optimist squads so they can learn and practice their new skills. We also run dinghy racing on Thursday nights which is a great introduction to racing for young sailors.
