Howth's Hallowe'en Dinghy Regatta Provides Big Bite Challenges Afloat And Ashore

The Laser is a single-handed racing dinghy. A key element of the success of the class is due to the fact it is protected by the One Design class rules. This means no changes to the boat can be made unless it is permitted in the class rules. As a result, all boats in theory are the same whether they’re brand new or 10 years old. Therefore, it is the sailor that makes the difference in races rather than the boat. The Laser is a challenging boat that rewards athleticism, subtle steering and trimming techniques, as well as tactical excellence. It is one of the singlehanded boats sailed at the Olympics by both males and females. There is also a strong showing in this class from club level all the way to international level. With over 200,000 boats in 140 countries, it is the most popular dinghy for any sailor young or old.

The Laser is suitable for all people with a weight range from around 40kg -90+kg. This is due to the different sail sizes that are available to the laser. There are 3 sail sizes that only require a different bottom section for the mast.

The Laser 4.7 (ILCA 4) uses a short pre-bent lower mast to maintain a balanced helm and a sail area that is 35% smaller than the Laser Standard. It is ideal for learning to sail or for the lighter weight sailor graduating from Optimist. The ideal weight range for the ILCA 4 is 35-55kg.

The Laser Radial (ILCA 6) is the next step up. It uses a more flexible and slightly shorter lower mast together with a sail area 18% smaller than the Laser Standard. The Laser Radial has a large following with national and international regattas and World Open &Youth Championships attracting as many countries and competitors as the Laser Standard Rig. As well as a strong following amongst lighter weight sailors the Laser Radial is also used for youth, women and masters racing. Many countries now support a full Laser Radial Youth programme and in a survey of national yachting authorities conducted by the International Sailing Federation the majority replied that the Laser Radial was their preferred youth boat.

The ideal weight range for the ILCA 6 is 55-70kg.
