  Club Crane Bookings

Many members and boat owners will already know that the club has commissioned the replacement of our main crane's 'slewing ring'. This specifically built part, designed to add significant extended life to this vital club asset, will arrive and be installed after the Easter Bank Holiday.

The club would ask for boat owners' patience and understanding that our crane will therefore be temporarily out-of-commission from Monday 28th April until Saturday 3rd May. Bookings for the crane and cradle can be made or rearranged by contacting the marina office at 01 839 2777

Irish Women's Match Racing World Qualifiers at HYC - 13th April

The Irish Women's Match Racing World Qualifiers were held in HYC on Sunday, 13th April and there was very strong competition and tight racing. 3 teams competed in the ISA Sailfleet J80s - Diana Kissane, Mary O'Loughlin and Laura Dillon were the helms. The racing was tight and wind conditions were quite windy, approximately 15-20 knots from a westerly direction. The races were initially sailed with spinnakers and then due to the wind conditions, rounds 2 and 3 were raced without spinnakers.

  Spring Warmer - Day 2 - 5th April

We had a cracking day's sailing on the second Saturday of the Key Capital Spring Warmer Series. While Howth summit had a bank of cloud sitting on it like a hat for most of the day, the race area enjoyed beautiful sunshine, good breeze and a nice flat sea. This meant a pleasant change from the seasick inducing swell of the previous week. The day also saw the welcome appearance of the Sailfleet J80s to the racecourse.

  ISA Youth Nationals Fast Approaching

With the ISA Youth Nationals only weeks away there is plenty of coaching for our HYC sailors in preparation for the event. Optimists, Toppers, Lasers and 420s have and will continue to train with their coaches. Expect plenty of activity in the boat park especially over the Easter holidays.

See the Dinghies & Training section and the Junior Calendar in particular for all dinghy training. Also of note is the Optimist Brassed Off Cup on 18th April where prizes could be possibly made of chocolate.

ISA President, David Lovegrove, receiving a briefing on HYC preparations for the ISA Youth Nationals

(L-R) Chris Howard, David Lovegrove,
Harry Gallagher, Derek Bothwell

The ISA Youth Pathway Championships are taking place in Howth between Thursday April 24th and Sunday April 27th 2014. Fleets include 420s, Laser Radials, Laser 4.7s, Toppers and Optimists.

The Youth Nationals form part of the ISA selection trials for the 2014 ISAF Youth Worlds and the ISA National squads and indicator for the ISA Academy. The event will also include the first leg of the Optimist trials.

To accommodate the large number of entries, HYC will be laying three separate race areas north of Irelands Eye. Additionally each day over one hundred HYC volunteers will be on hand to assist with hosting the championships, on and off the water. For those optimists sailors not included in the optimist trails, HYC will host an optimist championship fleet, to coincide with the event.

With some 250 dinghies and 280 competitors ranging in age from nine years to eighteen, it promises to be a busy week in Howth Yacht Club and a great opportunity to host Ireland's premier youth sailors.

Online entry is available - see right side panel.
