Howth Yacht Club's Autumn League returns this September for six weeks of racing, taking over Howth waters every Saturday from 12 September to 17 October.

The Autumn League has a prestigious history - the series originally began in 1979 with the Squib fleet, just a few years after the class was introduced to Ireland by Winkie Nixon and established at Howth. The opening of HYC's marina in 1982 transformed what had started as a class event into a full club league, allowing many kinds of boats, from cruisers to one-design fleets, to remain afloat and racing well into the autumn months.

Sailors flocked to Howth from around Dublin Bay and beyond, drawn by the novelty of a competitive autumn series at a time when most boats would traditionally have been hauled out for the winter. While sailing opportunities have expanded considerably in the decades since, the spirit that made those early Autumn Leagues such a success remains unchanged.

Now in its 44th official year, the Autumn League remains HYC's biggest annual racing series, bringing together sailors from across the island for a packed programme of racing across eight classes. This year's edition promises even more action on the water, with nine races scheduled for Classes 1, 2, 3, Puppeteers and Squibs, while the Howth 17s and Classes 4 and 5 will contest six races. Racing will get underway at 1pm each Saturday, with the earlier start helping competitors avoid challenging tide conditions later in the day.

Alongside the expanded race schedule, competitors can expect varied courses, with plenty to play for. More than 20 trophies will be contested throughout the series, including the coveted Heineken Trophy for the overall winner. Teams of three boats from different classes will once again battle it out for the Olympus Trophy.

Off the water, sailors and supporters can look forward to weekly food and drinks specials, the apres-sail kicks off on September 12 and continues each week thereafter. The weekly prizegivings and warm atmosphere have become synonymous with autumn racing in Howth. The series will conclude with the End-of-Season Dinner on 17 October, bringing competitors together one final time to celebrate another memorable league.

Event organiser, Gary Cullen shared his thoughts on what makes the Autumn League so special, stating “Given it’s a series, everyone shows up week after week, and the community around it is unmatched. If you’re going to do any sailing this year, do the Autumn League.”

The Autumn League is about much more than racing. It's about the post-sail stories in the clubhouse, friendly rivalries renewed each weekend, and a community that welcomes newcomers as enthusiastically as it does long-standing competitors. Generations of sailors have grown up with the Autumn League as a fixture of their sailing calendar, and every year new crews discover why it has become such a beloved tradition.
