Junior Summer Sailing 2014 Course Programme

The 2014 HYC Summer Sailing Course programme has now been finalised with some great new features. Our junior pathway has been reviewed and we are introducing a 'Go Racing' module following the Improver Skills level which, can be undertaken in an Optimist, Topper, Laser or 420.

All of the summer courses are included on the Course Planner and on the Information and Booking Form.

Due to the expected demand and interest in our summer sailing courses, a policy of first come, first served will be strictly applied. We will open bookings to current paid up members one day prior to accepting bookings for courses open to non-members.

Book with a friend: provided we have sufficient places, we can accept bookings for you and one friend for the same course - a separate form is required for each applicant.

Bookings will be taken in the main office during normal office hours.

420 Sailing in HYC

The International 420 Class has been steadily building at HYC over the last few years. The class is an established performance 2 person trapeze and spinnaker dinghy which is exciting and popular to sail. The 420 is also a youth development boat in Ireland and in 42 other countries, and still considered the top youth training boat. It is the ideal boat for those who wish to sail with another person, learn to trapeze and fly a spinnaker.

HYC fully supports the class through organised training for all levels of experience and skill throughout the year. Indeed, HYC own 2 club boats which are available for a try-out and can be used for the specific ISA 'Kites & Wires' sailing course. Emphasis is on club and local racing with many participants buying second hand boats. Those at the top of their game do travel to international events such as the World, Junior and European championships.

The 420 Class is also well supported by the class association at www.sail420.com with regional training and championships organised during the year. There is also a good Buy & Sell section for second hand boats.

Optimist Sailing in HYC

Whether you are just beginning or an experienced Optimist sailor there will be lots going on in Howth this year.

The season for most Optimists sailors in Howth Yacht Club will begin at Easter (more details available from the club website:- www.hyc.ie under dinghy sailing) which will include training for all levels, together with a great days racing on Good Friday, 18th April with the Brassed Off Cup (again for all levels) where everyone will win something (possibly made of chocolate!). Entries are limited to 50 so make sure you enter as soon as possible.

Topper & Laser Classes in HYC

Over the past few years our Junior section has grown substantially. The number of Optimist sailors in the Club has mushroomed beyond belief. As a result the Junior Committee has recognised the need to support additional boats for those sailors who grow out of the Optimist or indeed want to continue sailing single handed. We now have sufficient junior numbers to support both the Topper and Laser classes. See 'Which Boat' in side menu.

Topper

Many sailors 'out-grow' their Optimist and the skill levels and experience required to leap into a Laser or 420 are perhaps too great. The risk is that sailors are turned off by the prospect of sailing their Optimist for another year and indeed stop sailing. Thus we believe that the Topper dinghy will fill that void before moving on to their next boat.
For junior sailors the Topper is a fast and exciting boat to sail.

For parents they are an affordable alternative to the oppie and a Topper can almost be bought for the price of selling your oppie ! See www.irltopper.com for second hand boats.

We will introduce Topper training as the class develops in 2014.

Laser

We also have a number of sailors coming through the ranks that are experienced and have the ability to sail a Laser. In the future many of our Topper sailors will find it an easy transition to the Laser after sailing the Topper for a year or two. The growing number of junior sailors at HYC makes it important to have the structures in place for the future.

Laser coaching has already been organised on Saturday afternoons in February and March. Following a successful Laser clinic at Easter last year this will be repeated this year with all abilities and standards catered for. See the training and dinghy section of the website for further details.

In Howth we have a fantastic senior frostbite series with often over 30 boats on the water on Sunday mornings. The pathway of Optimist - Topper-Laser will feed nicely into the frostbites and long term there will be great opportunities to continue dinghy sailing here in Howth.

The IODAI website has an excellent life after Oppie section http://www.iodai.com/live/lifeafteroppies/
This gives further details on weight ranges for sailing, the different boats and which boat may be suitable for your child.
