Claremont League Day 2 - Racing with Amy’s Wind Tail
09 October 2025

Seven dinghies took to the water for Day 2 of the Claremont League last Sunday, completing three exciting sprint races in testing but exhilarating conditions. With a strong westerly wind and an ebbing tide, the race committee set a windward–leeward course off the west end of Claremont Beach, just west of the wreck, to make the most of the calmer inshore waters.

The breeze, a lively 16–25 knots in the wake of Storm Amy, delivered fast-paced and competitive racing. The fleet had great tight racing and very fast and challenging downwind legs averaging 3 minutes with all boats surfing and planing on their multi lap races - Melges had especially lively rides with their spinnakers flying, adding to the spectacle.
Close quarters racing demanded full concentration, and any lapse in focus was quickly punished—several capsizes kept both sailors and safety crews busy, proving that even the most experienced hands can get caught out in these conditions.
Race winners:
Race 1: Melges 799 – Michael & Andrew Evans
Race 2: Melges 803 – Stephen & Fergal Quinn
Race 3: Aero 45723 – Daragh Sheridan
