Howth Yacht Club presents Women at the Helm Racing

Howth Yacht Club proudly launches its first-ever Women at the Helm Racing Event on Friday 29th August!

Three thrilling fleet races will light up the water, with HYC’s female members helming in a mix of

Puppeteers, Squibs, H17s, J80s, J24s, Melges, and a PY fleet. Male crews will be involved with a

maximum of 2 males allowed on J80s, Puppeteers and H17s. All other sailors including the Helm

will be female. If you want to join in and don’t have a place on a boat – just enter and we will find a

berth for you.

With an all-female race management team running the show from start to finish, this is more

than competition - it’s a celebration of leadership, skill, and camaraderie. Expect fierce sailing, epic prizes, followed by a shoreside BBQ, live music, and a legendary Après Sail gathering where friends, family, and crews come together to toast this landmark occasion.

The Baltic Gold Trophy is a newly commissioned trophy donated by Rima Macken. Ten years ago, Rima took the helm of Eileen, a 1908 Howth 17, with no sailing experience - only determination, curiosity, and a deep love for the sea. She restored her, raced her, and grew into a confident sailor and helm.

As a Lithuanian woman, she chose amber which is “their Baltic gold “to represent strength, heritage, and endurance. Like sailing, it reflects resilience and timeless beauty.

This trophy honours all women who take the helm; with courage, skill, determination, and heart. It is for those who lead by example, navigate with resilience, and inspire others to follow in their wake.

Thanks to Irish SailingImage SkincareHermans and WaterWipes for their support.
