Howth 17 Special Race Day – Tradition Reignited
After years of absence, but never forgotten, the Howth 17 Class proudly revived its historic Special Day Races on Saturday, 7th June. These traditional races steeped in over a century of sailing heritage returned to the water, reminding everyone of the unique spirit and camaraderie of the 17 class.
Despite a forecast that threatened wind and rain, the weather held firm, with a steady 9–12 knots of breeze allowing the full race programme to go ahead. The atmosphere on the pier and on the water was electric, with plenty of excitement from both seasoned sailors and new faces.
Eight boats took part:
Echo (8), Leila (3), Deilginis (11), Isobel (19), Erica (18), Sheila (20), Orla (21), and Pauline (2)
Race Results as follows:
Ballot Race
1st – Deilginis crew on Erica
2nd – Isobel crew on Orla
3rd – Erica crew on Leila
Under 30s Helm
1st – Deilginis, helmed by Archie Malcolm
2nd – Erica, helmed by Matthew Cotter
3rd – Orla, helmed by Emma Fitzgibbon
Hogg Race
1st – Erica
2nd – Isobel, helmed by Fiachra Farrelly
3rd – Deilginis
To celebrate all the Under 30 helms, it’s worth highlighting the strong performances across the board. Special mention goes to Fiachra Farrelly (Isobel), Kim Kearney (Pauline), Tom Mulligan (Sheila), and Dylan Cassidy (Echo), all of whom brought great energy and skill to the racing.
All races were sailed cleanly, with no incidents reported. Class Captain David O’Shea played a key role in overseeing the day and delivered the post-race presentation following the rugby.
Between races, some crews even found time to enjoy a light lunch, while families and visitors gathered on the pier to soak up the lively scene. The day concluded with a fantastic BBQ, generously hosted by Howth Yacht Club, and plenty of shared stories. A huge thank you to the club staff for their support and hospitality.
A special thanks also goes to Karolina, who stepped in as the official class photographer, capturing the spirit and energy of the day beautifully.
Spot prizes were handed out after racing, while the main trophies will be presented at the Class Dinner later this year.
A heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, supported, and helped make the event such a success. Here’s to keeping these special races alive for many more years to come.
Looking ahead, the class is preparing for outings to Clontarf and Dún Laoghaire, with more special events in the pipeline.
