Packed house for our Local Race Officer course

Last weekend the club was buzzing with energy as a fantastic turnout gathered for our Irish Sailing Local Race Officer course. Seeing a wave of new faces eager to get involved alongside many of our top Race Officers was particularly exciting. Race management relies on committed volunteers; we encourage everyone to step forward and play a part. Thank you to Michael Keogh from Irish Sailing, David Lovegrove (IRO), Ed Totterdell (NRO), and Nigel Biggs (NRO) for delivering two very informative and entertaining training sessions over two days.

Many roles, with something for everyone
The audience in the room learnt that race management isn’t only about starting and finishing races - it’s a finely-tuned operation requiring a variety of skills. From Race Officers, Timers, Flaggers, Scribes, Drivers, Mark Layers, Judges, Umpires, and Safety Crew, there’s a role afloat for everyone. There are also essential roles ashore, including Beach Master and Results Officers. If you’re keen to contribute, there’s a job for you. Whether you bring existing skills or not, our race management team will ensure you get the proper training to enjoy your role.

New and updated course content
While top racing is at the heart of what we do, safety always comes first. The newly updated Local Race Officer course content highlighted structured and consistent approaches to race management to ensure a fun and safe time for all our sailors.

We want you
As part of the 2025 season, club racing will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, and Saturdays, alongside a full calendar of open events. Each race event requires a full race management team, which could include you. Contact Eoin Kernan on [email protected] to get involved.

Missed the course?
For those who couldn’t attend, don’t worry! The course will be repeated by Irish Sailing in the coming weeks, giving everyone another opportunity to sharpen their race management skills. Whether you're a seasoned Race Officer or a newcomer keen to get involved, this course is a fantastic way to enhance your knowledge and help keep racing at our club running smoothly.
