Racing Report: Dinghy Regatta 2024
This year’s dinghy regatta on Sunday 11th August saw a record entry of 63 dinghy’s. The day started with fog and mist which blew in from the south leading to Race Officer Mike Head and his team having to postpone the launching for 1 hour. There after beautiful sun burnt through the mist and a range of boats from Melges 15, Optimists, Feva, Topper, and a mixed PY fleet got 3 fantastic races in. The sailors’ skills in handling the tide, using their tactics to improve boat speed and understanding the wind all contributed to some great racing.
The newest class to HYC the Melges 15 was won by Mike Evans & daughter Sarah.
In the PY Fleet an Ilca 6 helmed by local sailor Vicktor Samilous won the PY fleet from Daragh Sheridan in an RS Aero also a local sailor followed by another Aero from Greystones Roy Van Maanen.
5 Toppers all from Skerries raced and won by Edvardo Gasset and the Feva was won by Charlie Robertson & Elliot Burke both from HYC.
The biggest class of all was the Optimist fleet many of whom have travelled to HYC for next weeks Optimist Nationals. First to third place went to DunLaoire Boats , Maeve Donagh, Lily Donagh and Max O’Hare. Best HYC sailor went to Kate Spain in 6th place in this very competitive fleet.
