The 2024 Gibney Classic Is Another Memorable Day

The picturesque waters of Malahide Estuary came alive with keelboats after the 30th annual Gibney Classic hosted by HYC. Keelboat fleets from various classes participated in a day of close racing, camaraderie and the inevitable celebration.
The event featured Cruiser Racers in Classes 1, 2, 3, and Non-Spinnaker, and One-Design keelboats including Squibs, Puppeteers and the Howth 17s. The forecast promised a break between the inclement weather systems and it lived up to all expectations.
On the committee boat ‘Star Point,’ a seasoned team led by Mike, Scorie, and Rupert orchestrated the day’s proceedings. Their expertise in conjunction with the HYC results office ensured smooth race operations, fair competition and a timely finish to allow for the tides.
Sailors enjoyed a relatively short race in ideal conditions—a light southerly wind under sunny skies. The finish line near the safewater mark at the delta of Malahide Estuary provided a thrilling conclusion to each race.
The overall Gibney Classic winner was Windsor Lauden and Steffi Ennis’s ‘Demelza,’ with runner up spot going to Fergal Noonan’s well-sailed Corby 25 ‘Impetuous.’ The honor of Best Malahide boat went to ‘Lazy Bones,’ while Davy Nixon’s ‘Erica’ claimed the prize for the first Howth 17 to reach the marina.
Post-race celebrations naturally unfolded at Gibney’s pub in Malahide with a generous array of prizes, drinks, and delicious food which replenished tired bodies. As crews gathered to unwind, they also caught the South Africa vs. Ireland rugby test match.
Approximately 250 crew members reveled in Gibney’s warm hospitality. Notable boats that joined the festivities included Judith Malcolm’s ‘Grebe’ and Tom Fitzpatrick’s ‘Saoirse.’
The 30th Anniversary of this event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous sponsorship from Gibney’s as well as support of Malahide Marina, which accommodated the large fleet. Malahide Yacht Club’s Commodore, Margaret Fay attended the prizegiving with many of her members and big thanks to event organisers Maureen Muir and Brian Turvey (Also MC) who’s hard work ensured a memorable day for sailors and spectators alike.
The 2024 Gibney Classic once again showcased the spirit of sailing, sportsmanship, and community, reinforcing Howth Yacht Club’s long relationship with the Gibney family and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
