Sienna Wright Wins Bronze at the Youth World Championships
Howth Yacht Club is proud to announce that Sienna Wright has won a bronze medal at the Youth World Sailing Championships held in Brazil this week. Sienna, who is part of the Women's Dinghy, ILCA 6 Class, had a successful summer on the international circuit, winning two silver medals in the U17 category at the ILCA 6 Youth Worlds in Dziwnow, Poland, and the ILCA 6 Europeans in Gydnia, Poland. Sienna's proud father, Darren, accompanied her to Brazil for the competition .
Sienna's performance throughout the event last week was nothing short of impressive. She was up against some of Sienna, Roos and Emma all wrapped in their respective national flags after Friday's finishthe best sailors in the world, and the racing was incredibly close at the top of the fleet. Despite the tough competition, Sienna managed to hold her own and secure a well-deserved bronze medal . Roos Wind (NED) produced a formidable fourth consecutive bullet on Friday’s final race to win gold. However, there wasn’t much of a margin between the ILCA 6 podium places as Wind finished just four points ahead of Emma Mattivi (ITA) and just one further point in front of Sienna at the conclusion of a dramatically close competition.
It was that trio that comprised the top three finishers in the final race on Friday, with the Howth youth sailor finishing second ahead of Mattivi and that proved enough for the Irish sailor to take the final podium spot ahead of Petra Marendic (CRO), who could only finish ninth in the final race of the competition.

In addition to Sienna's win, the Irish also won a bronze medal with Ben O’Shaughnessy and Ethan Spain in the Men’s 29er. The Youth World Sailing Championships marked the end of a successful 2023 season for Irish sailing, with four boats and six sailors representing Ireland in four of the classes .
We congratulate Sienna and the Irish team on their achievements and look forward to more success in the future.
