Race Training Squads

Our coaching department provides race training for all age groups, running 'squad' training sessions throughout the year. This is the club's 'performance pathway' and allows sailors to improve skills and gain knowledge throughout their sailing lifetime.

Regatta Squad “Optimist”

Fun training specifically for the younger sailors, this includes regatta fleet racing during the summer and after school training in the warmer month as well as Easter camp and Halloween camp. sailors can commit to as many or few for your diary.

Eligibility:             9 years + (minimum age is only a guide) Completed a start sailing course and have been recommended by their instructor to take part. 

Boats:                     Optimists - Limited amount of club boats may be available.

Dates:                     April -October


Transition Squad “Optimist”

Racing-orientated training to enable sailors to make the transition into main fleet racing. Providing the foundation of racing techniques in a team orientated environment. Students are encouraged to become more self sufficient while receiving support and guidance from our expert coaches.

Eligibility:             10+ (minimum age is only a guide) Sailors move up from the regatta fleet group or on the completion of the 'Improver Skills' course.

Boats:                     Optimists 

Dates:                     Spring – Autumn. Winter training is run on demand 


Performance Squad “Optimist”

Training for sailors competing at a national standard and Inclusive of sailors racing at the club. Coaching to hone racing skills to give that extra edge.

Eligibility:              11+ (minimum age is only a guide)

Boats:                     Optimists (please insure your own boat)

Dates:                     Spring – Autumn. Winter training is run on demand 


420 Squad

Training to enable sailors to make the transition from optimist to 420 and further develop racing skills. Often working in 2 groups the team works under the guidance of their coaches to develop skills and pass knowledge amongst its members. The team work closely with the 420 class association and other local clubs. Not only training at the club but being invited to participate in local and national training programs.

Eligibility:             Minimum Improver skills beginning the transition out of the optimist at around 50kg body weight  

Boats:                     420 the club can provide charter boats for a period to facilitate the transition into a new class
